81% of Small Business Owners Are Open to AI. Data Security, Not Cost, Is What's Stopping Them
Anthropic’s Claude for Small Business workshop tour reached more than 1,000 owners across ten U.S. cities, and the pre-workshop numbers cut against the usual story about small-business AI reluctance: 81% of registrants said they were already open to using AI tools before they showed up, and data security — not cost, not capability, not lack of interest — was the top-cited barrier to adoption. Roughly 80% of attendees ran businesses with 5-50 employees in construction, manufacturing, logistics, and trades — sectors with little history of early AI adoption — and two-thirds came focused on operational use cases like reporting rather than growth. In exit surveys, 63.5% said guided, hands-on build sessions were the most valuable part, and nearly two-thirds wanted follow-up implementation help. Anthropic is now launching a Claude SMB Trainer Program and continuing the tour into fall 2026.
The gap between stated openness and actual deployment isn’t unique to Anthropic’s cohort. OpenAI’s own small-business push, its ChatGPT for Small Business program launched in July, reported that 78% of participants in an earlier pilot built a working AI workflow within a single day, and 42% said they saved more than five hours a week as a direct result — evidence that the barrier really is implementation friction, not willingness. A single OpenAI customer story makes the same point at one-business scale: ATV Big Air Tour, a touring motorsports stunt show, turned roughly three days of merchandise-inventory work into three hours using ChatGPT Work, with no engineering staff involved.
Anthropic frames its own initiative around small businesses generating 44% of U.S. GDP while historically lacking the AI resources large enterprises take for granted. The workshop data suggests that gap isn’t a demand problem — it’s a hands-on-implementation problem, and the vendor willing to show up in person with guided build sessions, not just a product page, is the one converting stated interest into an actual workflow.
