Claude Cowork Now Runs Inside the Chrome Side Panel Anthropic Already Shipped

Anthropic just folded browser-based Claude work into the same Cowork session that runs on desktop, web, and mobile — the Claude in Chrome side panel is now a full Cowork instance, with conversations, skills, and connectors carrying over between the extension and every other Claude surface. A task started in the browser can be picked up on the phone without re-explaining it.

The practical target is the software Cowork couldn’t reach before: vendor portals, legacy systems, and internal dashboards with no API or official connector. Anthropic’s announcement frames this as extending AI assistance to whatever business applications happen to only expose a web UI — which, for most companies outside engineering, is most of them. Anthropic also shipped a new verification step that reviews consequential browser actions before they execute, plus a toggleable “automatically approve” mode for users who want fewer interruptions. Notably, the company states outright that its contextual-validation protections reduce prompt-injection risk rather than eliminate it — an unusually direct admission for a shipped feature. Rollout is staged: live now for Max and Team plans, coming to Pro “over the coming weeks,” and off by default for Enterprise, where admins opt in with domain restrictions.

Anthropic’s own usage data explains why the browser extension matters this much. Across roughly 1.2 million Cowork sessions in 600,000+ organizations, software development was only 8.7% of usage — business process and operations work was the largest category at 33.4%, ahead of content creation at 16.4%. Cowork’s growth has always been in the browser-shaped, non-engineering work that a coding agent was never built for. Wiring that same session into whatever legacy portal a finance or ops team is stuck in isn’t a side feature — it’s the product following its own usage data.
