Anthropic's Commerce Agents Are Already Booking Priceline's Flights, Hotels, and Cars in One Conversation
Priceline VP Cobus Kok has a specific line about the company’s new AI travel agent, Penny: “Penny navigates flights, hotels, cars in one conversation because Claude excels at that reasoning.” That quote anchors Anthropic’s broader commerce-agents launch — paired shopping-agent and merchant-agent blueprints that let retailers and platforms deploy AI assistants for catalog search, cart management, and in-conversation product comparison, plus seller-side tools for pricing recommendations, inventory alerts, and campaign drafting, with human approval required before any live changes take effect. Anthropic says participating enterprise customers have already reported carts up to 35% larger and shoppers 60% more likely to complete a purchase when a Claude-powered commerce agent is involved, and the partner roster backing the launch is wide: Shopify, Visa, Mastercard, Accenture, Intuit, Klaviyo, Wix, Zomato, Fetch, and Square, timed ahead of the holiday shopping season with blueprint code live on GitHub.
The pattern matches what systems integrators have been reporting from their own Claude deployments. Cognizant, which expanded its Anthropic partnership in July, says more than 30,000 of its associates have completed Claude training and cites a contract-intelligence system built for a biopharmaceutical client that cut contract review time by 40% while holding 88%-plus extraction accuracy — a different vertical, same underlying shift: Cognizant CEO Ravi Kumar S put it as “AI capability is rising faster than enterprises can absorb it… Our role is to be the bridge.”
For companies evaluating where AI actually changes a P&L line rather than a demo, commerce agents are a useful test case: the claimed lift is concrete and measurable, and the deployment pattern — blueprint plus human-approved guardrails plus a named enterprise customer willing to quote a number — is becoming the template other AI vendors are converging on too.
