Anthropic Puts a Former Fed Chair in Charge of Watching It
Ben Bernanke — Federal Reserve Chair from 2006 to 2014 and the 2022 Nobel laureate in Economic Sciences — has joined Anthropic’s Long-Term Benefit Trust (LTBT), the company announced. The LTBT is the independent governance body with authority to appoint members to Anthropic’s board; trustees hold no equity, share in no profits, and are compensated only for their time — a structure built specifically to keep them independent of both management and investors. Bernanke joins Neil Buddy Shah, Richard Fontaine, and Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar, and said the institutions built around AI will shape how its range of outcomes actually plays out.
The appointment lands the same month Anthropic published two pieces of safety research that show what that oversight is actually watching. Gradient-Routed Auxiliary Modules, a technique for isolating dual-use knowledge — virology, cybersecurity, nuclear physics, specialized code — into removable model compartments, deletes a capability almost as completely as if the model had never seen the data, tested across model sizes from 50 million to 5 billion parameters. Anthropic is explicit that it’s preliminary: the technique hasn’t touched a production model, and the company says it isn’t certain it ever will. Separately, interpretability research on a “global workspace” inside Claude identified J-space, a narrow subset of internal activity — a few dozen concepts at a time, 6-10% of total activation variance per layer — that the model draws on when it reports what it’s “thinking.”
Both projects are the kind of self-reported, unverified-by-outsiders safety work that makes an independent oversight body’s credibility matter — a trust with real appointment power over the board is one of the few checks on whether “preliminary, not certain we’ll use it” stays true. Bernanke’s specific expertise, steering an independent institution through a crisis most people didn’t understand while it was happening, is a pointed hire for a company whose product now shapes decisions most people can’t fully audit either.
